How Do I Look?
Photography, 2023
A photographic work titled ‘How Do I Look?’, which aimed to utilize the female gaze to explore the depths of my subjective desires as a woman while communicating to the outside world the image of femininity as it unfolds in my autonomous ideology. I presented the photographs, which are based on a unique aesthetic of the female experience of emotion, using female narratives in multiple lifestyles and fields of work to provide the outside world with an intuitive visual language of my values of female autonomy after escaping from hierarchical systems.
During the three months of the project, I traveled to different locations to complete various assignments and handed the camera to my family, friends, and even passers-by. They photographed me randomly for over five to seven hours every day, capturing my femininity and temperament on that day --- such as laughing at a playground, studying hard in a library, being dignified at a graduation ceremony, breaking down emotionally when I was upset, etc.
I use art to explore how women’s subjective identities are deeply intertwined with multiple intersecting forms of oppression, while also alluding to the fragmented nature of these structures and the inherent desire for connection.
